Barbeque Pit
A
barbeque pit refers to a large metal barbequing apparatus. They have
a distinct black look, and can often be seen on trailers at large summer
gathering. A pit is called that because of the large volume they contain.
They are shaped like large barrels that have been laid on their sides.
The barrels open along their midpoints to reveal a large grilling surface.
An old fashioned barbeque pit will feature large smoking areas, as well
as a huge grilling surface. They are charcoal grills traditionally,
although you can find propane fueled ones if you look. What differentiates
a pit from a mere grill is really the size though. You can cook for
one hundred or more people from a good sized pit, whereas a grill just
won’t come in that size.
A common setup for a barbeque pit is to have the pit affixed to a large
trailer. Some go so far as to have the trailer built in. These are known
as mobile pits. They are great for block parties, family gatherings,
or rallies. Some pits feature built in rotisseries, occasionally they
are big enough for roasting things as large as a pig.
